Validation of In-house Carbon Reporting

Patagonia (Australia) is headquartered in Torquay Victoria, has eight retail stores across three east coast states, a thriving eCommerce business and a wholesale dealer network nationwide.

Since 2020 Patagonia has been calculating and monitoring their carbon footprint as a measurement and base line to implement actions for absolute carbon reduction from their operational activities and their associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Heidi Fog works with companies of all sizes and industries in developing carbon reporting and carbon reduction planning. She readily shares her skills and knowledge, build over a decade in carbon accounting, energy-, waste- and water audits and is able to translate carbon report findings into recommendations for absolute carbon reduction and carbon offsetting.

Kate MaffetPatagonia Finance and Operations Director
“Heidi Fog has provided invaluable guidance to us to ensure that we are accurately recording and calculating our carbon emissions. Her pragmatic approach and deep knowledge of the subject has been instrumental to us in terms of getting our reports accurately completed to an industry standard. In addition, her thought provoking commentary has been helpful to understand where we can make the biggest impact in actual emissions reduction activities”

The Solution

The solution for Patagonia was to commission Heidi Fog to conduct a validation of their inaugural FY20 carbon account and assist in building Patagonia’s in-house carbon accounting capabilities. The now annual relationship has expanded Patagonia’s capabilities to account for 14 emission categories in the most recent FY22 carbon report from the initial 5 emission categories included in the FY20 carbon report.

The prime emphasis for the validation is:

  • Guide Patagonia in setting the emissions boundary to include emissions categories and sources within their operational control
  • Confirming and adjusting applications of calculation methodologies to be aligned with carbon accounting principles
  • Ensuring Patagonia applies emission factors against their input data from the most reputable sources
  • Provide recommendations for improvements to be considered to existing data quality as well as for ongoing reporting periods
  • Identify absolute emission reduction opportunities
  • Build Patagonia’s overall capabilities in carbon accounting
